The mandate, on the record

Everything the EU decides is public. What your representatives did with it is a different question.

Our Elected EU News follows the European Parliament, the European Commission and the Council of the EU — the files, the votes and the people your ballot sent to Brussels and Strasbourg. Primary sources, named positions, and a record you can check.

What we cover

Directly elected

European Parliament

The only EU institution you vote for. MEPs decide in committee long before they decide in plenary, and roll-call votes put every name on the record — including the ones cast against a stated national position.

  • Roll-call votes
  • Committee files
  • Your MEPs

Proposes and implements

European Commission

Legislation starts here, and a great deal of it is finished here: delegated and implementing acts turn a political compromise into the rule that actually binds, usually with far less attention than the original file.

  • Proposals
  • Delegated acts
  • Enforcement

The member states

Council of the EU

National ministers legislating together, where the decisive argument is often settled by officials before a public vote is ever taken. What your government argued for in Brussels is rarely what it announced at home.

  • Member-state positions
  • Presidency agenda
  • Working parties

How this newsroom works

Primary sources or nothing

Votes, agendas, registers and the acts themselves. Where a claim rests on a document, the document is linked — not summarised and left unverifiable.

Names, not institutions

"Parliament rejected" tells a reader nothing about their own representative. Where a position is on the record, the person who took it is named.

Corrections in public

Errors get a dated correction on the article that carried them. A quiet edit is how a newsroom spends the trust it is asking readers for.

Status

Coverage has not started yet. The newsroom is being built in the open: the reader accounts, the representative directory and the first desks are in development, and this page will carry the record as soon as there is one to carry.
